He came up with the idea of merging this company with Uni\u00e3o Fabril, where he also held stock, thereby creating the Companhia Uni\u00e3o Fabril (CUF). Alfredo da Silva\u2019s strong humanistic beliefs decisively marked the philosophy and development of the CUF group. Its business areas ranged from the financial to the chemical, textile to mineral ore, food processing to healthcare, shipbuilding to environmental protection sectors.\n\nCUF became a true centre of learning, training part of the Portuguese business elite and fostering technological development, not only within the Group but also across the whole country.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cp-timeline-content-timeline-block-child swiper-slide\"><div class=\"timeline-content icon-false \"><div class=\"timeline-block-timeline ctl-row  position-right\"><div class=\"ctl-6 timeline-block-time\"><div class=\"story-time\"><p>1974<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"timeline-block-icon\"><svg stroke=\"currentColor\" fill=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"0\" viewBox=\"0 0 512 512\" height=\"1em\" width=\"1em\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M256 8C119 8 8 119 8 256s111 248 248 248 248-111 248-248S393 8 256 8z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><div class=\"ctl-6 timeline-block-detail\"><div class=\"story-details\"><div class=\"story-content\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image ctlb-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/josedemello.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/timeline-1974.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4\/3;object-fit:cover\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading ctlb-block-title\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px\">25 April 1974 and nationalization of the CUF group<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"ctlb-block-desc\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px\">The Group, that had survived two revolutions, three political systems, two world wars and scores of crises, did not survive the revolution started in April 1974. In demanding the resignation for political reasons of the Board of Directors in September of that year, Lisvane\u2019s blue collar employees set the tone of the difficult times ahead. On 14 March 1975, the provisional government nationalized the entire banking and insurance sector in Portugal. On September 25th of the same year, the nationalization of CUF was enacted into law by means of Decree Law no. 532\/75. The CUF group\u2019s more than 180 companies, in such diverse sectors as chemical products, textiles, mineral ore, food processing, healthcare, shipbuilding and the environment, came under official State control. With over 110 thousand employees, the CUF group amounted to approximately 5% of the Portuguese GDP of the time.
